Byron Bay - Location Information

Byron Bay is located on the most easterly part of the Australian mainland with the Byron Bay Lighthouse situated on Cape Byron, the most easterly point. The Cape was named by Captain Cook in 1770 with the adjacent bay becoming known as Byron Bay when settlement commenced there around 1870. (more info below)

Byron Bay is accessible by air, by car or by rail from all major centres. The nearest airports are at Coolangatta on the Gold Coast - approx 60 minutes drive to Byron Bay, or Ballina also approximately 60 minutes drive to Byron. If you are planning to drive Byron Bay is about 9 hours drive north from Sydney, or about 2 hours drive south from Brisbane. Long Distance coach companies service Byron Bay and the North Coast of New South Wales. A Rail service also operates between Sydney and Brisbane, travellers wanting to get to Byron Bay should change to a connecting bus service at Casino - the whole trip by rail from Sydney takes about 13 hours, from Brisbane 3-4 hours.

Byron Bay is the focal point of the Northern Rivers Region of New South Wales. Uncrowded beaches, lush rainforests, picturesque surroundings and an idyllic climate have attracted a curious mix of hippies, surfers, rich urbanites, actors and artists to NSW’s Northern Rivers region.
